About Us

Native Americans believe that dogs are a gift from Creator sent to teach us. A dog's "medicine" is to teach us to give and receive unconditional love, to trust, to serve selflessly, to forgive, and to live in the present. So why Sacred Song? Our dogs rarely bark but they do howl like a wolf. To me, the howl is like a prayer being sent to Creator. It is mysterious, moving and captivating. Although they don't do it often, I never tire of hearing them.
The picture above is Ista Hanhepi (Moon Eyes in Lakota). Ista (pronounced eeshdah) was my first dog. I purchased Ista to accompany me on backpacking trips. At that time, I operated and lead backpacking retreats. The dog I was looking for to fulfill that role would need to be calm in a wilderness environment, keenly sensitive to his surroundings to warn me of any unseen dangers, intuitive to me, ready to obey commands quickly, friendly and social to help guest backpackers feel comfortable in the wilderness, and athletic to be able to carry gear for many miles a day over rugged terrain. As I researched potential breeds, I began wondering if my expectations were unrealistic. Then I found the Native American Indian Dog and Siberian Indian Dog. Ista was all of those things and more. He is a friendly, happy, well-balanced dog who is eager to please and truly in his element hiking and carrying a backpack. He loves hiking almost as much as he loves people (especially children) and tummy rubs. I also own a long hair Chihuahua and a Pomeranian who are older, and all my Indian dogs are very gentle with them. Ista continues to backpack and serves as a mentor in puppy, obedience, and therapy dog training classes. His latest achievement is serving as a certified therapy dog. He has a way of drawing people in and sharing his love with them that is quite special. Of course he also serves as the lead dog at Sacred Song as well.
People that meet the Native American Indian Dog and Siberian Indian Dog describe them as "soulful". You can see the intelligence in their eyes. They will look you in the eye as they “read” you. You can watch them actually assess a situation and problem solve. Simply amazing! I’ve owned dogs all my life and I’ve never seen anything like it! The bond between the Indian Dogs and their humans can only be described as "spiritual".
I was a foster home for rescue organizations and have seen first hand neglected and unwanted animals. My decision to breed, therefore, was not a decision I took lightly. This breed is special. It is my love and respect for this breed and what they bring to the lives of people that motivates me. My love for the breed comes from owning the most incredible dogs I have ever been blessed to encounter. I am dedicated to protecting, preserving and promoting these incredible breeds by breeding responsibly and placing dogs in carefully selected homes.
